Therapy?

On Monday the 14th, we went to therapy to be re tested for the upcoming year and Zeke tested out and no longer needs therapy.  How exciting, one piece of good news after another!  He tested at a seventeen month old in his throwing skills and at level for all the skills.  He just can't learn how to go down those steps the right way even though he knows how to get down off all the furniture!  He just loves to do it in his time though and that is perfectly fine with us! 

Dr. Appt Update

On Thursday the 10th of Sept, we went back to Dr. Sawyer in Memphis to get a check up on Zeke's feet and arm.  We got very good news, NO SURGERY right now.  We will discuss it again in 6 months and probably no surgery until he is 7 or 8 which will be much safer.  We discussed a prosthetic and he will refer us to a friend at Shriner's in Lexington next summer as Zeke nears the age of 2.  However, he believes they will tell us that he is performing normally without one and kids hate wearing them and have us come back when he is around 5.  We are so blessed by God in every way!  After the appt, we of course made a trip to Babies R Us and then to Joe's to eat.  Zeke drank out of a cup with a straw at the restaurant and ate his whole kid's meal.........it had been a long day!  He loves drinking out of a straw now!

Labor Day Weekend @ Mt View

We went to Mt View camping at Sylamore for Labor Day weekend.  On Friday, we went to eat at Tommy's Pizza (which was fabulous).  They had a couple there playing and singing and it was really nice.  Zeke loved the music.  On Saturday, it rained, so Angie, Zeke and I slept most of the day while the boys fished.  Saturday night was the first Hogs game of the year.  Sunday we went to town to the square and then to Blanchard to the caverns (but we didn't go in).  Sunday night, Dustin, Zeke and I all attended our first drive in movie, which was District 9 with Robby and Angie.  The movie wasn't that great, but the company was!

Zeke's 1st Birthday with Bob, Larry, and Friends

Zeke's first birthday party was so much fun. Lots of people came to the party and he got lots of nice things. We did a veggie tales theme and I spent lots of time trying to plan it out just like I wanted it. I made his smash cake and it was a lot of fun baking it knowing he was gonna love it! I truly know about baking something with love now, lol. We had the party at the church at around 4 so he would be happy and rested. He helped me open some of his presents, but was much more interested in the paper.

For his actual birthday, we had pizza and 2 of his grandmas came over to watch him eat cake and ice cream again. He really loved the pizza and cupcake. After that, we went for a ride on his new golf cart. It was so much fun celebrating his birthday!

One year ago today, our miracle arrived and this is the story that we had to tell that day:

Zeke's Birth Day

At 2 am on Monday morning, I started contracting, not a suprise. The doctor checked me at 3 am and I was dilated to a 2. He said that I had to go to labor and delivery so I am thinking so what. Then he says you can have an epidural whenever you get ready since you already are feeling the contractions, so I decided maybe they weren't kidding this time. By 5, I had my epidural. By 6, I had some spots that weren't numb and were called hot spots, which don't get numb. By 7, i was dilated to 4 and by 8 I was dilated to 10 and ready to start labor. At 8:39, Zeke came out screaming and boy could he get loud. They put him over in the bed and started checking him out. They called Dustin over to talk to him. They told him that he was breathing on his own and was looking good, but that they had a few ortho issues. His left side was very constricted in utero and his left arm is missing from the elbow down. His left leg also appears to be turned outward, but they aren't sure if it is because his hip is out of place or if it is just his foot. They take him out of the room to be admitted to the NICU. The nurse brought him over for me to look at and told me he was 4 pounds 1 oz and 17 inches long. Once he was gone, Dustin and I got some much needed time alone. We talked about how glad we were he came out screaming and he explained to me what the doc had told him. We both thanked God for our little blessing and then we decided that we should tell the family before we went upstairs to see our little man. We told our parents and they informed the other visitors we have that our boy had a couple of problems. When we got to the NICU we were overjoyed to see he still was breathing 100% on his own. He was happy and healthy from what they could tell. I spent the next few hours in my room with family while Dustin took each one in and out of the NICU to see him. Dustin was completely exhausted so we decided to go in together and visit with Zeke alone. It was wonderful to get to be together as a family, we both even got to hold him. We came back to the room and after the family left we crashed. I woke up several times to call the NICU and each time we heard good things. He started eating 6cc's of formula every 4 hours last night at 8 pm and has been doing that ever since. We are so excited about that too.

We saw several doctors in the NICU today. The first was a ortho pediatrician. He explained the xrays to us. The left arm has the ulna, but not the radius bone and he has mobility so that is a really good sign. His legs are not dislocated, they will ultrasound his hip joints in 6 weeks to determine if they are growing incorrectly or if it is just his feet that are. If it is his feet, he will be put in a series of braces from 2 months of age to 10 months of age to straighten them out. If it is the hip, he will wear a brace for that too, didn't say how long on that. Then we saw a geneticist who told us that he was going to do ultrasounds on the abdomen and brain, and get a cardiologist to do an ECHO and compile that with our history to determine if the problem is genetic but he believes it is not from initial review. He believes that since the arm forms before 21 weeks that it is not due to the PPROM, but instead it is from a syndrome called amniotic band syndrome. He said the blood flow was restricted to the arm and that is probably why it didn't continue to develop. He said we were lucky because the blood flow could just have easily been restricted to the head or legs or any other body part. He said our boy was lucky, but I say he is just meant to be! The cardiologist did an ultrasound of his heart and had all normal findings. They have an IV in his head so they haven't done the brain ultrasound yet. They hope he will be able to eat enough not to need the iv soon. Tonight he is having trouble digesting his food. His tummy can't digest all the food they are giving him because he isn't stooling quite enough. So he throws up at every feed. They decided they needed an accurate measure of intake/outake so they put in a feeding tube, this will also keep him from aspirating if he throws up. Now that he has seen all his doctors he is in a closed bed to keep him warm and quiet, this is a good thing, the open bed is for babies that are at high risk for problems.

Today was an amazing day, a day of celebration of life. I think sometimes we take for granted how fragile life really is, thankfully I no longer do that! I know that God gives us one day at a time and it is all about what we do with that one day. I remember so well 2 am August 11, 2008. It was just another day God had kept me pregnant, another day for Zeke to grow. I went into labor and thought it would be like the many other trips to L&D. At 3 am, which seemed like forever waiting on him to get there, the dr. informed me otherwise, this was it! When we got to L&D, we called our parents to tell them the news. It seemed like forever before anyone got there! By 7, I remember that I had seen Mom, Dad, Cyn, Gran, and Lisa, and they were shortly whisked away so Dustin and I could bring our boy into the world all on our own. We wanted to be there alone to bear any good or bad news together before anyone else was in there, just another way God protected us and brought us closer together. I had a fairly quick labor, around 40 minutes of pushing. When I heard him cry, I knew everything was going to be okay. Shortly after that, I was trying to get Dustin to go over to him and I could tell something was wrong by the look on his face. I couldn't hear the doctors talking, but he could. He heard them say he was missing his arm, his hip was out of place, he had no knee caps, and that it looked syndromatic. They were all wrong, except for the obvious, he was missing an arm. They brought my boy over to me wrapped up, I thought I was going to get to hold him but no such luck. I got to look and then they whisked him away, better than some mommys get. He was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen and I was crying my eyes out. After they left, Dustin shared with me Zeke's condition (or what the docs thought anyways). It was very hard for him to have to tell all of that to me. We just held each other and prayed, so thankful that everything appeared to be okay for that moment. A NICU nurse came in to talk to us to tell us what she knew and give us pictures, I treasure those to this day! When they finally decided I was able to go see him, we shared the news with our parents and friends. Our first trip to the NICU was hard but amazing. Our little boy was so sweet laying in his open bed sleeping away. You could tell by looking at him that he was a fighter and that he would not give up easily. He had a beautiful head of dark brown hair with an IV in it, a sweet face that called out to kiss, a tiny hand that he always kept near his face, little heart patches and wires, a preemie swaddler diaper that was folded down it was so big, two tiny feet that were all snuggled up in a snuggly with hearts on it and he layed on a blanket with footprints. The blanket (though standard in most hospitals) reminds me of the footprint stuff you see, through this time I carried you, and I believe God did just that. I did not get to hold my baby boy or feed him, but I just stared at him and got to touch him with my index finger and I already loved him so so much. It is so amazing how much you can love someone. Lots of family and friends came that day and night, but after a while he had had too much company and was overstimulated so we had to let him rest and go back later. When we went back that night, he was eating a little but we still didn't get to hold him. The following day, I got to hold him, Dustin was so afraid he would pull his IV out that he just wanted me to hold him. When she put that baby in my arms, the whole world felt right! Nothing is better than that to this day! He got better day by day and I watched him grow long before I could bring him home.

A year has passed and Zeke has really changed. He went from 4 pounds 1 oz to 21 pounds 2 oz and from 17 inches to ___inches. He is really walking good now for a while, 10-12 steps. He is so sweet when he wakes up in the morning. He just sits up in the bed and cries out until I get him and then he just smiles. When he gets sleepy, he wants me to rock him and cuddle him (this is a new thing). In the car, he likes to take a paci (also a new thing) and listen to his veggie tales cd or sleep. He loves to crawl, cruise, or walk around and he almost always has his bat. He loves to stroll in the mall, but please don't shop. He loves the play area in the mall and riding the golf cart and bike. He loves to play with anything he can beat on and roll the ball back and forth. He cries occasionally when I leave him and is very clingy these days. He loves to play with and laugh at Chance. I don't know why a dog is funny. He loves Cheerios anytime of day. He likes apple juice better than white grape. He spits food out if he doesn't prefer to eat it. He despises shoes, so we will see how these SMO's go. His favorite thing to do on a sunday afternoon is nap in the chair with momma (oh wait is that his fav or mine.........good thing we both LOVE it). He is really good in church for one hour, if it lasts longer than that he is ready to go. He also loves to play in the nursery and knows exactly where it is, lol. He has made lots of friends this year. He plays with Caden at Gran's & Kaylee at church. He is getting better about hitting. He still loves Abbi and Emma and watches their every move. Dustin and I have still yet to go out alone because he is so entertaining, we will have to do that soon, lol. He loves to call the Hogs, just ask him! He just loves life!

God has a plan for our child and we love to watch it shaping day after day, we live our lives to be a part of his! Each day brings new challenges and each day God helps him through them. He is doing everything any kid his age can do and more! Our God is a Big God and he can move any mountain you have in your life. He leaves footprints when he carries us through our storms and rainbows when they are over, how great is that! Keep Zeke in your prayers for the next few weeks for his braces and his next set of x rays, we know God will provide a way!

Last week off........

I can't believe summer is coming to an end, it goes by so quickly. This week has proved to be rather busy with the usual stuff plus a birthday party and school starting. On Monday, we had therapy and we discussed getting Zeke the SMO's that Dr. Sawyer said he might need before we came back for our next appointment. They will help to support his ankles as he begins to walk. He is still taking a few steps at a time if he really has a goal in mind. On Tuesday, we got him fitted for the SMO's which was awful. He had to be really still while the lady put a sock on, wrapped a tube around his foot, got it wet to form it to his foot, and then while she cut it off......on both feet! He does not like to sit still for one minute so of course he did not like this......the best part is they grow out of them every three months so I get to hold him down like that pretty often. I guess that is just one of the not so fun things we do as parents. On Wednesday, we had a lazy day playing around in the house and visiting at Gran's. On Wednesday night, we set up some for the birthday party. On Thursday, we headed to sick call because Zeke had a fever for the last couple of days and has been really cranky. I knew it was his teeth when I went, but couldn't stand the thought of it being his ears and blaming it on the teeth so we went to make sure. He is cutting both top teeth right now at the same time, they appear to be almost all the way through, thank goodness! Tomorrow, we plan to enjoy our day together by doing nothing but playing all day long. I love getting to do that, I will miss it when I go back to work. Why is life so busy??? and so fast???

My First Haircut

July 9 was Zeke's first hair cut. We didn't cut a lot, just a trim in the back and over the ears. Abbi was so helpful and held Zeke so her Mommy could cut it! Zeke didn't mind at all since she was sitting with him! Yay!

11 months

Wow, time has flown by, it will be time for a birthday party before too long. This past month Zeke has really started to pick up on things quickly. He learned to call the Hogs in about 10 minutes, it is so cute! He tries to repeat things you say, but only on his terms. If you tell him to say something, he won't! He loves all the foods we have let him try so far. This month he got to try marshmallows, spaghetti, hamburger, biscuits, cool whip, and a few others. He loves everything, getting him to eat greens is getting harder! As he has started taking a few steps, we have had to begin talking about SMO's which will help support his ankles. He has his next ortho appt next month and we will find out then what we will do, so be praying!

One Step at a Time

On Sunday, Zeke stood alone for quite a while at church. He bent down to pick up toys and stood back up, pretty shocking to me. When we got home, he took a couple of steps after a toy Dustin had. Papaw and Meme came by that afternoon and he used Papaw to pull up and took 3 steps toward Meme and Momma. That night, he was pushing his toy all across the floor. He is not as excited about it now as he was, but is still restless at night. Now, he gets so excited, realizes crawling is faster and sits back down, ha ha. He is on the move constantly so he can't have anything slowing him down! He constantly babbles these days. He has said bye, bye, puff, do, BaBa-which we are sure is Papaw, lol, and he makes all kinds of sounds. I love to listen to his sweet voice say anything but Mama is still the sweetest.

Our Week at the Lake

Sunday, June 28~Today, we got up and headed to see Nana, Poppy, Uncle Matt, and the rest of the crew at Charlotte. We hadn't seen Poppy in almost nine months and we were all eager to get together. We enjoyed a nice lunch and played for a while. When we left, we met Rachel, Bryan, and Abbi in town there to head to the lake. When we got there, we popped up the camper and then headed to the trailer to stay. We attempted to roast hot dogs and marshmallows but the fire was too hot and we were too hungry to wait so we had microwave dogs, lol. The biggest task of the day was for Bryan to find a roaster for the world's smallest marshmallow roast, HA!

Monday, June 29~This morning we got up and headed out on the lake right after breakfast. We packed a lunch and we were off. We spent several hours riding, tubing, and eating. Abbi really liked riding the tube! We caught a quick nap and then went back out for an evening ride. When we got in we cooked enchiladas and burritos. Zeke and Abbi must have had a plan, because they both refused to go to sleep until well after 10! That wouldn't be so bad, except we started trying at 8!

Tuesday, June 30~We got up today and cleaned a bit and then headed out for a cloudy day. It started to rain so we headed over to camp to see if it was raining at the camper. It was on its way, so Bryan, Rachel, and Abbi headed home. We headed to Heber to run from the rain. We ate at Pizza Hut and got some snacks at Walmart and then headed back to start our first camp adventure.

Wednesday, July 1~Today, Grandma, Grandpa and Travis joined us for a day of boating and grilling! Zeke really enjoyed sleeping with Grandpa and swimming with Grandma and Travis! His fav part of the day was getting to see the fish when they took him to the docs. Emma came over to see us today also (oh yea and Gin and Jack too, ha). She was riding her tube too, Go Em! We had a really fun day with family!

Thursday, July 2~Today, we headed to Charlotte to visit again. Courtney and Grace were there and the kids got to play a little. They really loved playing outside with Poppy and Nana. We had so much fun visiting, so sad to see them go! When we got back to camp, we cooked and then built a fire. This was Zeke's first campfire and marshmallow roast. He really liked the marshmallows, when it got messy and we cleaned him up he screamed so loudly. It was so funny to see him get that upset

Friday, July 3~No company, no trips, whatever will we do? We managed to get in some much needed quality time, just the three of us. We spent the day boating, napping, reading, playing ladder ball, cooking, and just loving being together. It was a blast! We celebrated the fourth today......by going to the fireworks show. We met Mom and Don there and she watched Zeke swim a while. They went back up to watch from shore while we watched from the boat! Zeke enjoyed them a little at a time. He would watch and then get sleepy! It was cute!

Saturday, July 4~Today, we came home from a long week! We had many visitors when we got home--Papaw, Meme, the girls, Grandma, and Uncle Travis. We had lots of fun playing! What a wonderful week, seeing all our family and enjoying the lake! So sad to see it go!!!

Fun Filled Saturday

Today, Dustin let me sleep an extra couple of hours. Dustin and Zeke got up, ate some cereal and played. When I got up, we took him out to play in his little pool for a while. He was much more interested in the grass than the water! We came in and got around and went to Newport for a few last things we need for the camping trip. He finally gave it up and took a nap on the way home, but wouldn't stay asleep once we got home. He just played and played all day, a little fussy from not much of a nap. We rode our bike over to see Gran and play. When we got back we had a few visitors, Papaw, Meme, and Grandma all came by to see us. What a fun day!

Nap, Swim, Nap, the life of a baby

This morning we got up and played in the floor. Zeke got stuck in the table again and was pushing it across the floor, I tried to get a video, but he started crying, it was so funny though! Then we rode our bike to Gran's to visit and then to the pool. We swam and he floated around with Rachel. His favorite today was for me to put him on the side and let him scoot in, even getting his head wet a little, he just laughed. We came home and took another nap, the lazy days of summer are so much fun!!!

Father's Day Weekend

First of all, I must say what a wonderful father Zeke has. We are so thankful that he has chosen to bring Zeke up in church and to be the example he needs in a father.

On Saturday, we went out in the boat and got in the water for the first time this year, Zeke's first time ever to be in the lake. He loved being in the water and didn't mind the boat all that bad today. He even took a two hour nap in it. We were worried about him sleeping there without getting in the water for a couple of hours in the heat, but he was fine.

On Sunday, I cooked breakfast and then we rushed around to get home in time for church. We missed church by just a few minutes because Dustin had not had a shower. : ( After that, we just stayed at home and took a nap and then headed out to Dad's for the afternoon. Dustin's first Father's Day was special to all of us!

June 15-19
All this week we have been getting up early and going walking with Caden and Gran while poor Chan had a workshop : ( . The boys love to go strolling together. They have someone to "chat with". On Wednesday, we went to the pool to swim. On Thursday, Granny Fannie came to visit. On Friday, we went for a walk with Chan and Caden, to the park, to the beauty shop, and then came home to get ready for the lake. We spent lots of time taking naps in the recliner and in bed, just relaxing and enjoying each other's company. It is so great to be at home with my boy, enjoying every second of it! When we got to the lake on Friday, we sold our pontoon for a $2500 profit, YAY! Then we turned around and spent it to buy a camper, lol. Zeke will enjoy camping so it will be worth it, I keep reminding myself he may not like it this year, lol. First week off, one word, Amazing! Summer will be all too short!

Our First Zoo Trip

June 14~~We got up Sunday morning and headed to Babies R Us to get new car seats. We knew what we wanted, but they weren't open, so we took a nap in the car, lol. When they opened, we shopped until the storms passed and then we were off to the zoo. It took us about an hour driving around listening to the GPS (that kept getting lost when we went under overpasses, lol) and Zeke scream, but we found it! Many exhibits were closed and they have shrubs grown up around the fences so Zeke coulndn't see the animals from his stroller, but he still had a great time watching people and looking at the bright scenery. He loved the penguins the most, he was watching their every move, it was too funny. By the time we were ready to leave, Zeke had fallen asleep. After the zoo, we were all ready to eat, so we headed to Colton's in Marion. Zeke got to eat some of our baked potato, a real treat for him!!! He loved it!!! When we got home, we were so ready to rest!!!

When we got home from the party, it was time to get ready for the wedding. Zeke ate some lunch and then I got ready. We took off to the church as Zeke stayed to take a nap with Grandma Lisa. Angie did really well, not many tears in the bride room, lots of laughter and good jokes. Zeke even joined us for a few minutes after his nap. After the wedding, we all went to the reception, which was alot of fun. Then, we cleaned up as quickly as possible. Zeke started to get hungry so we went home around 7:30 to eat and pack. Friday was our anniversary and we had planned to do something just us, but decided to take Zeke to the zoo instead. We left Saturday at 8 pm and went to stay the night in Memphis, Zeke was ready to play when we got there. So we did, for about an hour.

Saturday June 13~~All the kids are getting so big, can' t believe the girls are three now. I missed their last party because I was in the hospital and despite being in the wedding, we were determined not to miss this one. The party was at 1o, but we left early to join them and Meme and Papaw at the mall to play. The kids played at the playground by Target. Zeke loved playing with them in an area where he could crawl all over the place. He chased them (if that is what you call it, they are way faster than he is). He pulled up to all of the animals and even played with the spinners on the wall. He really thought that was a terrific place to play and so did we because it wasn't hot!!! There was hardly anyone there either, how awesome that was. Then we took off to the party which we were all just in time for. The girls were so excited to see their party off and running when we got there. They took off and played. After about thirty minutes, they got to eat cake and we had to leave. We were off to get ready for a wedding and for Zeke to take a nap! What a day already!

10 months old............already???

Zeke is growing and growing and growing. They say life flies when you are having fun and it is so true, this last ten months have done just that, flown by. Zeke is just over twenty pounds (5 times his birth weight). Zeke is still working on all the things he did last month.......no real new skills! He is cruising a lot better though, in between all the furniture now. He is starting to take pictures off the shelves and notice my things! We have had to start really telling him no, which I hate. I am not good at discipline. He still likes to get up and move away when you take his diaper off, he must not like wearing them. What more can a kid ask for, he never wears clothes at home! He is getting stingy with his kisses, and starting to hit you in the mouth instead (another no no). He is rather strong these days (in both arms), so his hits hurt. The biggest new thing this month has been his eating. I started cooking veggies and slicing fresh fruit, putting them in a chopper, then putting them in ice trays to freeze them. He loves it!!! He will actually eat now instead of me forcing food down his throat! He eats carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, potatoes, green beans, peas, strawberries, watermelon, pears, pineapple, bananas, and apples. He LOVES it all, and I am so glad. I was afraid he was never going to like food!!!

Inservice week~June 8, 9, 10

This week, I had to go back to school, and it is the week before Robby and Angie's wedding. What a busy time! Monday after work, we went to Jonesboro to the dr. to make sure Zeke's ears were clear, which they were! He weighed 20 pounds 3 ounces! When we got back home, we went for a walk with Sandra and Kaylee. The kids loved strolling together because they could just look at each other or talk to each other while they enjoyed the ride! They were so cute, but they are getting big so fast! Tuesday, we went out to Dad's for a little swim after work. Wednesday, we went to PT, to eat at Whole Hog, and to get some groceries. When we got back, Dustin headed to the church to decorate for the wedding and Zeke and I stayed home. He ate and then headed to bed. We were both so tired from all the going we have been doing lately......

Last two days of kids............First few days of Summer

June 1-6, 2009~~~This week has gone by so quickly. We were all ready for the end of this school year, kids, teachers, parents, and even Zeke. Wednesday was our first day out of school, Zeke and I were so excited to spend the day together. We had 9 month pictures made in the morning and then drove down to Newport to set our stuff out for the yard sale and see Granny Fannie. We visited until we had to go to Jonesboro for PT. At PT, Zeke got to be out in the big gym. He crawled up an incline, up a few stairs, cruised around some furniture, and crawled all over the place. This is our lives these days, doing anything and everything he decides he is big enough to! We love watching him learn new things and he does it almost on a daily basis. He is waving bye bye with his whole arm and is still giving the sweetest sugars, two of my fav things when I say bye bye or hello to him each day! Thursday, we stayed home and inside as it rained all day. It was so wonderful to spend a day at home, we will be making as many of those as we can this summer. Life just gets so busy sometimes, I love when i can slow down and enjoy it and that is just what we did! Friday, Dustin took off early and we headed to the lake! We went out for a boat ride that afternoon and Zeke really enjoyed it. Fast forward one day......Zeke does not like the boat, lol. He didn't get a good nap all day and was soooooo cranky. We decided to come on home so we could sleep in our own bed and let him nap on the way home. Sunday, we headed over to the pool and played after church. Zeke enjoys watching all the kiddos splash and play!
